The most common types of cancer therapies

Cancer therapy is a treatment method designed to kill or prevent the spread of cancer cells. There are numerous types of cancer therapies, each with its own unique approach, suitable for different types and stages of cancer. The choice of therapy is made individually for each patient by their medical team, taking into account factors such as the type and spread of the tumor, the patient’s age and overall health, and potential side effects.

Medical Oncology at the WPK Academy Cancer Center stands for:

  • ascertainment of your diagnosis by second opinions in radiology and pathology as well as molecular biology
  • most modern treatment of cancer with particular emphasis upon immune oncology, precision medicine and their combinations as well as with chemotherapy thus guaranteeing the best possible outcome relative to your disease resulting in personalized treatment
  • a group of medical oncologists thus guaranteeing that you have 24/7 access to appropriate care
  • close interaction with specialists from other disciplines leading to optimal interdisciplinary care including discussion of your particular disease and its stage in interdisciplinary tumour boards

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses drugs to disrupt the division of cancer cells and kill them. These drugs are administered either as tablets or infusions. Chemotherapy can be used alone or in combination with other treatments, such as radiation or surgery.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy uses ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells. Like chemotherapy, it can be used alone or in combination with other treatments. There are two types of radiation therapy: external radiation, where beams are directed at the body from outside, and internal radiation, where radioactive substances are placed near the tumor.

Immunotherapy

This treatment boosts the body’s immune system to fight cancer cells. There are various types of immunotherapy, such as monoclonal antibodies, which block specific protein molecules on cancer cells, and checkpoint inhibitors, which prevent the immune system from suppressing itself.

Surgery

In surgery, a surgeon removes the tumor along with some healthy tissue surrounding it. Often, surgery is combined with other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
