Urology

Urology? What is it actually?

Urology as a medical service deals with problems and diseases of the urinary tract, both in men and women.

The urinary tract includes the kidneys, but also the ureters, bladder and urethra. Urology also deals with the male reproductive organs: penis, testicles, scrotum and others, which further emphasises the importance of this segment of healthcare.

Anyone can have problems in these areas, so it is an intrinsically important part of medical healthcare and the system. Urology as a medical service is best known as a surgical service and speciality.

The complexity of this medical department makes it inevitable that practising doctors have knowledge of a wide range of specialities such as gynaecology, internal medicine and others.

What is the function of a urologist?

Urologists are doctors who specialise in diseases of the urinary tract. Their expertise enables them to treat situations that affect the kidneys and bladder and the muscles associated with them.

But a urologist’s scope of practice covers even more: it deals with problems and diseases affecting the penis, testicles, scrotum and prostate.

Why it is important to see a urologist when symptoms occur.

Failure to seek early treatment when problems occur can lead to a number of different serious conditions. To name just a few of the most common: Conditions such as kidney or bladder damage and prostate cancer.

When visiting a urologist, various procedures are usually used for diagnosis: Lab tests to determine problems such as blood cell counts and possible kidney dysfunction. Medical imaging of the kidneys, bladder and other related organs is also very common to diagnose the potential problem and find the best treatment option for the individual.

Without a visit to a urologist and the resulting lack of early diagnosis, serious or even life-threatening problems related to the urinary tract simply cannot be diagnosed and treated.

Urology in Vienna at the Vienna Private Clinic: Lutetium-PSMA-targeted therapy.

The Centre for Urology offers Lutetium-PSMA-targeted therapy based on a radioactive procedure (irradiation from the inside). Patients with prostate cancer have an additional option, even if they have exhausted all ‘classic’ therapy options.

All men over the age of 45 should undergo regular screening at least once a year; high-risk and prostate cancer patients must do this more frequently.
