Endoprostheses for all large joints

Endoprostheses are implants, which replace damaged joints, in their entirety or in part. Hip endoprostheses, knee endoprostheses, shoulder endoprostheses and ankle joint endoprostheses as well as modular growing prostheses for children and young people are now available. They can consist of titanium alloys, other alloys, plastics, ceramics or combinations of these materials.

The key criteria for the choice of material and construction of endoprostheses are resistance to constant mechanical stresses and resistance to surface abrasion.

The latest minimally invasive surgical techniques now largely allow the gentle implantation of the endoprosthesis. They accelerate rehabilitation after the operation.

The Competence Centre For Orthopedics of the Vienna Private Hospital is a highly competent endoprosthetics center. Highly qualified specialists for each step in the treatment and rehabilitation chain work here, from the selection of suitable prostheses and the surgical planning process, which is increasingly supported by 3D computer models, through to rehabilitation and postoperative examinations.

Hip operations

Hip joint difficulties can have many causes. Some are congenital or appear during growth in childhood and youth, others result from injuries such as fractures, and many result from decades of wear and tear.

In almost all cases, a hip operation can significantly increase maneuverability, mobility and quality of life.

Hip prostheses

The hip joint forms the flexible connection between the torso and the legs. The main cause for hip joint problems is wear and tear of the cartilage tissue. It is felt as pain, only when the joint surface is stressed in early stages, but more and more frequently in the unstressed position in later stages. The successful implantation of an artificial hip joint will significantly reduce pain and improve hip joint functions. In the process, the worn bone or cartilage tissue is replaced by hip endoprostheses made of plastic, ceramic or metal components.

Artificial hip joints have been continuously perfected over the past seven decades. The hip prosthesis is one of the most successful and most common treatments for severe arthrosis of the hip joint. Minimally invasive techniques are now mainly used in the corresponding operations, which minimize scarring, reduce recovery times and help to avoid complications. In this respect, the Wiener Privatklinik has one of the most well-staffed competence centers in Vienna.

Knee operations

Knee pain can be the result of a natural development of advancing age and age related wear and tear of individual components of the knee joint. However, it can also result from excessive strain in high-level sports, intensive physical activity, or acute injuries due to a fall or bad poise.

Whether the pain is caused by (sport) injuries or wear and tear: Pain or instability of the knee joint often means a massive loss of quality of life. Whether it is a torn ligament or meniscus problem, arthroses or wear and tear – a knee operation can significantly increase maneuverability, mobility and quality of life in almost all cases.

Knee prostheses

Knee prostheses and the surgical methods for their implantation have come a very long way, especially in the last ten years. The physicians at the Competence Centre for Orthopaedics of the Wiener Privatklinik are at the forefront of development in Vienna. One the one hand, the greatest progress has been made in terms of quality, i.e. the durability of knee endoprostheses. Even young, physically active patients can now be sure, to a reasonable degree of certainty, that their implants will survive without damage for at least one and a half to two decades of bold sporting activity. Older, less active patients can expect increased mobility and a pain-free quality of life into old age from their knee prostheses.

The other great progress is owed to imaging techniques such as computer tomography and magnetic resonance – and the implementation of their results in 3D models on computers. Such models are used for so-called pre-navigation whereby the physician plans the operation in advance. Cutting planes, cutting positions, prosthesis sizes and inlay dimensions are determined in the pre-operative planning process. This allows an artificial knee joint to be inserted in a minimally-invasive manner with a small incision and a short, high-precision operation. This means that patients with new knee joints will enjoy pain-free manoeuvrability after an unimaginably short rehabilitation phase.
